IGTV (Instagram TV) is an exclusive feature for Instagram videos, it's essentially Instagram's answer to YouTube bcoz of what they designed IGTV to share mobile-optimized high-quality long videos. Previously Instagram allowed on 60 seconds video to update, its been almost 2 years IGTV has been introduced where a creator can upload a one-hour length video.
IGTV hasn't seemingly gained a hype of grip as an entertainment option as yet, but Instagram has repeatedly noted that it has options, that it can still make IGTV a more obvious consideration for viewers and creators.
How IGTV monetization works?
In a recent tweet posted by reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong, Instagram appears to be close to rolling out a new monetization program for IGTV creators.
Instagram plans to initiate a program for its IGTV creators to make money from their content. It has an internally prototyped Instagram Partner Program, which will allow eligible influencers to earn money by 'running short ads' on their IGTV videos.
Just like other video-based platforms such as Youtube, Instagram will set criteria to decide which account is eligible to monetize their IGTV content. The criteria can be anything, it might be based on the number of watch hours a creator has accumulated over a certain period or their follower count or both, but its yet to be revealed.
To what Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram elaborated in a tweet TechCrunch's Editor at Large, who published a story about the IGTV test: "It's no secret that we've been exploring this. We focused first on making sure the product had legs-or else there would be little to monetize in the first place. IGTV is still in its early days, but it's growing, so we're exploring more ways to make it sustainable for creators."
Maybe due to lack of money-making policy IGTV has seen the absence of great content. Ads in IGTV seem like an organic development, given Instagram's history with monetizing its products. Since Instagram is run by Facebook, it has placed ads in almost all of its features, which include feed, Stories, and recently Explore.
Alexandru Voica, EMEA Communications Manager at Facebook, tweeted "We continue to explore ways to help creators monetize with IGTV. We don't have more details to share now, but we will as they develop further."
IGTV spent almost 2 years trying to gain video-makers to volunteer for free, and the result wasn't entertaining. If testing goes well, Instagram might add another revenue stream to it. It will be a win for Content Creators who put their efforts into creating engaging IGTV videos
